How To Install Kali Linux 2020.1 On 32-bit Or 64-bit System

System Requirements

1. Minimum 1 Gb of RAM (Recommended 2 Gb)
2. Processor: 32-bit/64-bit processor
3. 20 Gb minimum of hard disk free space
4. CD/DVD drive/USB drive
5. ISO Image file of Kali Linux
6. Internet connectivity (optional)

Creating USB Bootable Flash Drive For Kali Linux On Windows System

Before creating USB bootable flash drive for Kali Linux, you have prepared the following requirements in order to create bootable USB flash drive for Kali Linux:

1. Download the Kali Linux latest/old version ISO image from the official website, i.e.

i. Latest version link: https://www.kali.org/downloads/
ii. Old versions link: http://old.kali.org/kali-images/

2. Download and Install a USB Bootable Creation Tool/Software on your Windows system. Such as ‘Rufus’/’Universal USB Installer’

Create USB flash drive for Kali Linux using Rufus

1. Once the Kali Linux ISO image download is completed, plug in a USB flash drive/pen drive (at least 8-16 Gb’s of space)
2. Now open the Rufus USB bootable creation tool.
3. Select the USB drive from the Device list.
4. Press Select and browse to the ISO image, you downloaded from the official website.
5. In the Partition scheme section, select MBR option.
6. In Target system section, select BIOS or UEFI option.
7. In Volume label, give any name to your disk.
8. Choose File system as FAT32 (default)
9. Now, click on Start.
10. You may be prompted with a warning message, i.e. Download required
11. You can click Yes to download the file.
12. You might get a warning about Installing in hybrid mode, i.e. ISO Hybrid image detected.
13. Now, select Write in DD image mode and click on OK button.

Creating Kali Linux bootable USB stick using Universal USB Installer

1. Windows users have to download USB installer software from the following link:


USB installer is used to put Kali Linux into the USB stick as bootable disk.

Note: Make sure you have atleast 8-16 Gb free space in your USB stick.

2. After download, double-click the Universal USB Installer setup.
3. Press I Agree.
4. Now select Kali Linux from the drop-down box.
5. Press Browse button to select the downloaded Kali Linux iso image file.
6. Choose USB stick drive and press Create button.
7. Press Yes button to continue.
8. Now press Close button.

Kali Linux 2020.1 Installation

1. Plug the Kali Linux 2020.1 bootable USB flash drive into a system, where you want to install Kali Linux 2020.1.
2. Restart the computer system.
3. Press the Boot device menu key and select USB to boot first.
4. Select USB device and Start the Kali Linux 2020.1 Installer.
5. Select Graphical Install option and press Enter key.
6. Choose Language, Region, Keyboard layout, etc.
7. Wait for the Installation components to be loaded.
8. Now, set your machine Hostname and click on Continue.
9. Set the Domain name, such as xyz@123 and then click on Continue.
10. Create a User for non-administrative activities.
11. Now, set Full name and User name.
12. Set Password for the User.
13. Set desired Timezone.
14. Now, follow the on-screen installation.
15. For Clean Installation, select Guided-use entire disk in the disk partition screen (Warning-clean installation will remove all other Operating Systems installed on the computer system).

Note: Recommended method: Manual Installation

Manual Installation Procedure

Step 1: On Partition disk, select Manual option and click on Continue button.
Step 2: Now, select the Partition of your choice and click on Continue.
Step 3: Select Automatically partition the free space option and click on Continue.

OR

If you want to Create a New Partition, then follow the steps given below:

Step 1: Select the Create a new partition option and click on Continue button.
Step 2: Enter Partition size and click on Continue button.
Step 3: Partition will be Logical, so we will select Logical option and click on Continue.
Step 4: Select Beginning option and click on Continue.
Step 5: Now, two important things on the next screen are Use as and /root

Note: i. Use as should be Ex4 journaling file system
ii. Mount point will be set to /root

Note: In order to change Mount point, double click on it, New screen will open and then you will select /root option.
When you are done, click on Continue button.

16. Select Done setting up the partition and click on the Continue.
17. “Write the changes to disk and configure encrypted volumes”, select Yes and click on Continue.
18. Now, select Finish and then click on Continue button.
19. “Really erase the data on SCS13 (0,0,0), partition #2 (sda)?”, click on Yes and click on Continue button.
20. Wait for the installation to start, it should take few minutes.
21. If you have a Network Proxy for external access, then configure it in the next screen.
22. Package manager apt configuration will start.
23. Choose Software applications and Kali desktop environment to install and click on Continue.
24. You can choose tools based on your Kali Linux use case-purpose for installation.
25. Install the GRUB boot loader to the master boot record, so you can boot your Kali Linux image.
26. Now, select the Target disk for GRUB Installation, mostly the first disk and then click on Continue button.
27. Your installation completed successful, if you don’t see any error message.
28. Now, click on Continue and Reboot your Computer system.
